The gals are sitting on the porch!  It's a  beautiful fall day & you can hear the  windchimes as well as the quiet  satisfaction in their voices as they  finally sit in a couple of rocking chairs  in each other's company.  Alicia is  beginning to suspect that Byron "has a  problem" with going to grocery stores.   Alicia states that she learns more about  folks at their funeral & that was all it  took to get the stories started...

Spice Cake©2003 Jeannie Sherwood
Cream together:1/2 cup shortening1 tbsp. molasses1 1/2 cups sugar
Add:1/2 tsp. salt1/4 tsp. cloves1/8 tsp. nutmeg1 tsp. vanilla
Beat in:2 eggs
Alternately add:1 cup of milkand2 1/2 cups of Sifted Cake Flour
Stir in by hand:1 tbsp. double acting baking powder
Pour into well prepared 9" round pans.orOne 9x13
Bake in a preheated 375º oven for 25  minutes or until tester shows done.
Rest on racks for 15 minutes, remove and  allow to cool completely before icing.
Boiled Icing©2003 Jeannie Sherwood
Mix together the following ingredients in  a heavy guage saucepan or double boiler:
1 cup dark brown sugar1/8 tsp. salt1/2 cup of heavy half n' half3 tbsp. butter1 1/2 tbsp. light corn syrup
Mix all the following together and allow  to come slowly to a boil; boil for one  minute. Remove from heat and allow to cool  slightly.
Optional addition:1 tbsp. instant coffee crystals
Stir in:1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
With hand mixer beat in:1-2 cups sifted confectioners sugar. You  decide the consistancy you desire. For  instance, if I'm making a 9x13 cake that  is staying put in the pan I don't mind if  the icing is a bit runny. If I'm making  the 9" rounds I like it stiffer.

Byron's been boosted, and boy is she full of spit & vinegar in this episode. Alicia's making spaghetti instead of the chicken and dumplings she actually wants.   The gals keep trying to talk about lighter  subjects, but they are both in the mood to gripe...about most everything.  Byron  wants everybody to tell us where they get  their local products from. Pretty soon things take a lighter (funnier) turn & just like magic, the gals are back to cutting up. We hope you enjoy this episode.
