For years, I've watched her spend hours and hours, using her creativity to make reading magical for kids. She's one of those people who creates and shows up in costumes, transforms entire rooms, develops whimsical programs, and uses enchanting reading voices--she's truly unlike anyone I've seen before in this regard. Kids who have experienced her inspiration have had their lives changed. (I added photos of her at her former library so you can see how she goes at this.)However, literacy is a serious problem in her area, and their local library is too bare. They desperately need books to fill the shelves so children can learn to love reading. If you remember perusing the shelves of your local library as a child and how it felt to check out a stack of good books--imagine how your childhood would have felt without that experience.Now imagine growing up without books to help you envision overcoming struggle or develop big dreams.The public library is one of the few places kids can go that costs nothing. It's so, so important--especially in economically-challenged areas--for those shelves to be packed. Poor parents can't drop $100 at Barnes and Noble. If books aren't in the public library, kids won't read them.Would you consider helping my friend out? Spice Cake©2003 Jeannie Sherwood
Cream together:1/2 cup shortening1 tbsp. molasses1 1/2 cups sugar
Add:1/2 tsp. salt1/4 tsp. cloves1/8 tsp. nutmeg1 tsp. vanilla
Beat in:2 eggs
Alternately add:1 cup of milkand2 1/2 cups of Sifted Cake Flour
Stir in by hand:1 tbsp. double acting baking powder
Pour into well prepared 9" round pans.orOne 9x13
Bake in a preheated 375º oven for 25  minutes or until tester shows done.
Rest on racks for 15 minutes, remove and  allow to cool completely before icing.
Boiled Icing©2003 Jeannie Sherwood
Mix together the following ingredients in  a heavy guage saucepan or double boiler:
1 cup dark brown sugar1/8 tsp. salt1/2 cup of heavy half n' half3 tbsp. butter1 1/2 tbsp. light corn syrup
Mix all the following together and allow  to come slowly to a boil; boil for one  minute. Remove from heat and allow to cool  slightly.
Optional addition:1 tbsp. instant coffee crystals
Stir in:1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
With hand mixer beat in:1-2 cups sifted confectioners sugar. You  decide the consistancy you desire. For  instance, if I'm making a 9x13 cake that  is staying put in the pan I don't mind if  the icing is a bit runny. If I'm making  the 9" rounds I like it stiffer.
